Route through the Churches of the Antequera Renaissance

The Renaissance developed in Europe from the fourteenth century to the beginning of the sixteenth, coinciding with the passage from the Middle Ages to the Modern, with the appearance of city-states and the rise of the bourgeoisie. The main ideological current was humanism, which considered man as the center and measure of all things. The architecture was characterized by the use of modular proportions, the superposition of orders, the use of domes and the introduction of colossal order. And in the city of Antequera you can discover a great variety of churches with this architectural style.

Parish Church of San Pedro

The primitive church of San Pedro was built in 1522. Soon this temple was small starting new works in 1574 although, given the scarcity of means and the ambitious work, it lasted for quite some time. We know nothing about its initial designer, although in the years 1627 and 1636 the works were directed by the architect of the Cathedral of Malaga, Pedro Díaz Palacios.

The Collegiate Church of San Sebastián is the result of numerous additions and reforms over time. Its construction began in 1548, directing the works the architect Diego de Vergara. The year 1692 was important for this temple since it is the moment in which the Insigne Colegial is moved from Santa María to this church of San Sebastíán, with which it will undergo a great transformation and embellishment.

Parish Church of San Juan Bautista

This church of San Juan that was completed in 1584 and must be by the same architect who drew the Templete del Papabellotas. In its external appearance only the cover of the feet and those of the side naves deserve to be highlighted. However, the elevation of the land has a negative impact on the external appearance of the monument, since the covers are half-buried. The interior is truly solemn.

Real Colegiata de Santa María la Mayor

The importance of this building lies in being the first to be conceived within the Renaissance style in Andalusia. It is truly an exceptional work for its proportions and quality of its design. In it, two different style criteria coexist; on the one hand we find elements that remind us of the late Gothic and on the other its traces and various decorative elements already correspond to the new style that emerged in Italy.
