Museum of the City of Antequera – MVCA

Antequera Museum is located in the city’s historic centre, specifically in the Najera Palace, an 18th Century building with brick façades and a tower with views.

It began as the town’s Archaeological Museum which, in 1908, with the agreement of the Council, was started by Rodrigo Amador de los Rios. The initial exhibition was in one of the ground floor corridors of the Town Palace, where over the course of more than fifty years an important collection of valuable historic items was assembled, the majority of which were from the Roman period.

MUSEUM OF ANTEQUERA.

The uniqueness of MVCA lies in the exceptional quality of the exhibits, their excellent state of preservation and range of items collected over centuries by earlier town councils, church institutions, local archaeological riches and acquisitions undertaken by those interested in developing the institution, leading to the establishment of the original City Muse

The Museum shows the history of the ‘Land of Antequera’ in a general, complete, chronological and illustrative way by means of a highly representative range of archaeological, historic and artistic exhibits. Covering 20 exhibition rooms the permanent display offers a journey through the history and the art of Antequera and its surroundings from Prehistory to the 21st Century.

The archaeology section must be highlighted, where we find the most emblematic item of the museum ‘The Efebo of Antequera’, a bronze Roman sculpture dating from the 1st Century. Also to be highlighted are baroque paintings, sculptures of artists such as Pedro de Mena, work in gold, textiles, as well as modern and contemporaneous art, where the artist Cristóbal Toral particularly stands out.

Visiting the museum is an excellent way to appreciate the rich history of Antequera, its past, its importance as an Andalusian city, its artistic, historic and modern heritage.

The Museum is adapted to ensure accessibility and has developed a technology of inclusion such as assisted reality for people with intellectual disabilities.

It offers visits with audio guides in several languages and includes versions for children.
