Association of Rural Tourism South of “El Torcal”.
The Southern Tourism Association of “El Torcal” brings together several rural lodgings located south of the Natural Park of “El Torcal”, mainly in the villages of La Higuera, La Joya and Los Nogales -all of them belonging to the municipality of Antequera.
The main objective of this association is to promote rural tourism in an environment that is practically unknown to most of the people of Malaga and our visitors. There are many attractions in this place, nestled in a privileged location in the heart of the province of Malaga and very well connected to the main cities of Andalusia: Granada, Cordoba, Seville. In addition, these small villages located at the foot of “El Torcal”, being open to the influence of the sea due to its proximity to Malaga, have a typically Mediterranean climate: a spectacular spring for its colors and smells, a hot summer, a mild autumn and a mild winter. The scenic beauty of this area, coupled with its quiet and natural lifestyle, make the South of “El Torcal” an incomparable setting to “get lost” and forget the stress of everyday life. All this seasoned with the hospitality of its people, who try from the first moment to integrate the people who rent their homes in the culture of the environment. The visitor to this southern area of “El Torcal” can also enjoy clean air, without any pollution, and consume food (wine, oil, fruits, goat cheese, etc.) totally healthy and organic. And at the same time you will have the possibility of practicing a wide variety of activities in contact with nature: hiking, horseback riding and cycling, paragliding, climbing and various excursions (to the Torcal, to the Garganta de El Chorro, to the Laguna de Fuente de Piedra…) On the other hand, the owners of these rural establishments intend to recover ancestral traditions and important vestiges of the history of the area. Such is the case of the rehabilitation of the castle of Jeva, a photaleza of the fifteenth century, now very deteriorated by the passage of time and the hand of man, who has used it as a quarry for the construction of nearby farmhouses. In the same line of action, another of the priorities of this group has been to rescue from oblivion the Escaleruela route, an ancient Roman road, of great archaeological and heritage value, which in its day was the main access to Antequera from Malaga. This route has been restored and put back into operation in March 2007, extending over 20 kilometers, during which spectacular views of the southern area of “El Torcal” can be contemplated.
