Church of Our Lady of Loreto

The church dedicated to Our Lady of Loreto began to be built in 1693, by order of the Jesuits, to whom also belonged the school that stands next to it. The building as a whole is popularly known by the name of “Las Recoletas”, due to the Augustinian Recollects, who were housed in it after its abandonment by the Jesuits.

Both the church and the school belong to the Philippians of Our Lady of Sorrows. In this church we find the most monumental façade of all the Antequera Baroque, being made entirely of ashlar stone, as required by the concept of external prestige of the Jesuits.

In any case, the works of the façade were not completed. The interior of the temple is unfinished at its head. It has a single nave covered with a half-barrel vault and has large tribunes connected to each other.

Its decoration is based on plasterwork, of extraordinary ornamental effect and richness. The main altarpiece, a mixture of baroque and neoclassical style, has among its most outstanding images a Divina Pastora, from the nineteenth century, and a Crucified, with a stylized figure and restless composition, which must have been made at the beginning of the seventeenth century.

In a small chapel of the church you can also see an image of the Virgen del Tránsito, lying on a magnificent bed of apparatus, Rococo style.

It should be noted, on the other hand, in a niche located in the middle of a pilaster, a San Francisco de Borja, attributed to Pedro de Mena. In the pictorial chapter of this church, taking into account that in its day it belonged to the Society of Jesus, most of the canvases deal with themes related to the Jesuits.
