Discover the San Juan de Dios Church.
This is one of the most notable baroque historical sites in the city and one of the best examples of architecture associated with the Hospitaller order of San Juan de Dios.
The church and ancient hospital alongside it were constructed in the 18th Century, after the arrival of this hospitaller order.
The church was designed as a conventual church and hospital, following the typical style established by the order, central plan, rich baroque decoration and a space dedicated to the liturgy and spiritual care.

It has a Latin cross plan, although the most distinguishing feature is its cupola on pendative supports, decorated in plasterwork with animal and vegetable motifs. Light which enters through stained glass windows creates a religious baroque effect.
The main altarpiece has a pretty sculpture of the Virgin, located in a central niche accompanied laterally by images of San Joaquin and Santa Ana. This church also brings together a significant pictorial ensemble, whose theme generally relates to passages from the life of San Juan de Dios.
The façade of the San Juan de Dios Church consists of a rectangle flanked by large Tuscan pilasters and entablature, above which is the bell gable. This is all carried out in sandstone coming from the ruins of the Roman city of Singilia Barba near to what is now Antequera. The exception is the entrance which is of red limestone from the Torcal natural park.
